Google's most important focus is innovation and it has continued to make huge investments in this area. Alphabet is the parent company of Google. It invest in Research and development for making improvements to the existing products and services as well as development of new products and services. Its R&D expenses in 2017 increased by 2677 million dollars from 2017. Its investment in R&D in 2017 was 16,625 Million dollars or 16.6 Billion dollars. the brand is quite aggressive in terms of research and development and its R&D expenses have grown very fast during the last five years. they have more than doubled in this period. Its R&D expenses mainly include the compensation expenses of R&D employees and facilities related expenses as well as depreciation and equipment related expenses.
In the first quarter of 2018, Alphabet spent 5,039 million dollars on research and development which was much higher than what it spent last year during the same period. Last year in the first quarter, it had spent 3,942 million dollars on R&D.
