The table above includes the research and development costs of HP Inc from 2014 to 2017 and that of HP Inc and its subsidiaries from 2002-2015. Hewlett Packard and Hewlett Packard Enterprises separated in 2015.
HP is a leading provider of PC and other access devices, imaging and printing products, and related technologies, solutions and services. The brand has a large customer base globally. It sells to individual customers, SMEs, large enterprises, government customers as well as health and education sectors. Founded in 1939 by William R Hewlett and David Packard, HP was incorporated in 1947. In 2015, HP was divided into HP and HPE or Hewlett Packard Enterprises. After the separation Hewlett Packard company changed its name to HP Inc. The brand has achieved some serious growth since it separated from HPE. Having overtaken Lenovo, HP has become the biggest PC maker of the world. In 2016, the brand acquired the printing business by Samsung which has also helped it gain momentum. However, given the decline experienced by the PC and printing businesses in the recent years, HP has acquired some impressive strength.
The computing industry is an intensely competitive industry and due to the intense competition, the spending on research and development is also higher. HP has continued to spend 1.2 Billion dollars over the previous three years on research and development.
