IBM's investment in research and development was  high primarily driven by the impact of acquisitions and effect of currency. In 2017, the Research and development expenses of the brand were 7.3% of the revenue and 7.2% in 2016. IBM spent 5,787 million dollars on R&D in 2017 and 5,751 million dollars in 2016.
