Starbucks' entire business is distributed across four reportable segments that  include  1) Americas, which is inclusive of the U.S., Canada, and Latin America; 2) China/Asia Pacific (“CAP”); 3) Europe, Middle East, and Africa (“EMEA”) and 4) Channel Development (Starbucks Annual Report 2017).  Apart from it, the brand has  several non-reportable segments. The brand is operational is 75 countries with more than 27000 total stores operation in these markets. Its number of total stores operational globally has grown more ṭhan 6 times since 2001. There were total 4709 Starbucks stores running worldwide in 2001 and this number has increased to 27339 in 2017.

Since 2009, the number of its company owned and licensed stores has remained relatively balanced and now the number of licensed stores is 789 higher (in 2017) than US (49% v 51%).  However, the company owned stores are the bigger source of revenue for the coffee brand. In 2017, its company owned stores earned the brand 79% of its net revenue whereas the licensed stores generated 11% of the brand's net revenue. After US and Canada, Mexico, China and Japan are major markets for Starbucks. As of October 1, 2017, these 2 markets had 1540 and 1218 Starbucks company operated stores operational respectively. Apart from it, China had 1396 licensed stores operational in October 2017. This also shows the growing importance of the China market for the famous coffee brand.

The number of US based and international Starbucks stores has grown relatively balanced towards 2017. In US, there are close to 14000 Starbucks stores operational whereas there are more than 13400 stores operational internationally.
